Dear Mum
This is a book that I absolutely love; it has only recently come to print and many of the women in the book I know personally, many of them are dear friends . . . they have inspired me and I wanted you to have a copy because this book can inspire every woman.
It can inspire every woman to know that her age does not define her beauty or her worth – it does not define who she is. But more than that, a woman who embraces her elder years emanates a beauty that is timeless and ageless and which inspires younger women like me to not fall for the false images of what it is to be a woman that we are bamboozled with by the media and society, but to know that our true sense of worth can never come from outside of us, from what we do or don’t do – but from who we are.
I have strong in my memory a time when I was little and I was in your bed, and I asked you – “Mummy, what do you want me to be when I grow up?”
You looked at me, your face and eyes full of your tenderness and you said – “I don’t want you to do anything specific Katerina, I just want you to be happy.”
That was a precious moment – what I took away from it was that it wasn’t what I would do in life that would see me succeed or fail, but me simply allowing myself to be me, the real me in the world, and in the grand playground of life.
This book is filled with stories of women from their 50s to their 80s, all from different walks of life, from different parts of the world, many of whom have been through very difficult and challenging times as can so often be the case in life – who are so comfortable in their skin as older women, it is pure joy. In fact, they celebrate themselves and their age and their beauty simply glows.
So I hope you enjoy this book as much as I do. Let it rekindle the timeless beauty that I see in your eyes every time we speak on Skype – even if this beauty that you are, you might not be able to see yourself.
With all my love
Katerina
